Q&A Engineering

1:How great is the demand for aerospace engineers ?
Usually only a few seats are available in this discipline in few selected engineering colleges/institutions as it is a highly specialised but small branch of engineering. Most of the opportunities tend to be in research, academia, working in defence or for the government.

2:I want to know about the employment opportunities for Aerospace Engineering from IIT.
Aerospace engineers design, develop and test aircraft, space vehicles, missiles, etc. applying engineering principles and techniques. The best opportunities available in the sphere of aerospace engineering would be available for students graduating from the IITs. Placement is usually in organizations like HAL, DRDO, space research organizations, defence establishments, airlines and aircraft industry, in general. Most students, however, opt to pursue higher studies more suitable for opportunities in research and development, teaching, etc.

3:What is included in the entrance examination for B Arch courses?

Architecture entrance tests like AIEEE (www.aieee.nic.in) evaluates Mathematics and Architectural aptitude. Most other architecture aptitude tests just have an aptitude test that calls for geometric construction of lines, curves, forms, rotations, and development of surfaces, simple plans and elevations, lettering, visual logic, composition, space relation, colour concepts, aesthetic appreciation, basic knowledge of significant buildings, building elements and materials, memory drawing, sense of three dimensions, shading and colouring, proportion and scale.

4:I am a CBSE class 12 student. How can I get admission into engineering colleges in Mumbai/Maharashtra ?

For admission into engineering colleges in Maharashtra, you will have to go through the Directorate of Technical Education .Visit www.dte.org.in right now to find out about the admission procedure for Outside Maharashtra Students (OMS) . This year MH-ENG-ASSO-CET-2006 will be conducted at various centres in Maharashtra and outside Maharashtra State on Sunday, 28th May 2006 for admission to 1st Year of 4- year full Time Degree Courses in Engineering/Technology in the state of Maharashtra for self financing colleges. Log on to www.mkcl.ws/mhengasso for details.

5:What are the jobs for B E in Industrial and Production Engineering?
Industrial and Production engineers develop and plan utilisation of production facilities and personnel to improve efficiency of operations in an industrial establishment. If your college has campus placements, you have an added advantage. Job prospects depend as much on you, your performance and your efforts in the job search.

6:Where are the Regional Colleges of Engineering located? What is the admission procedure?
Erstwhile Regional Engineering Colleges are now known as the National Institutes of Technology, numbering eighteen. There are located in Allahabad, Bhopal, Calicut, Durgapur, Hamirpur, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Jamshedpur, Kurukshetra, Nagpur, Patna, Rourkela, Silchar, Srinagar, Surathkal, Surat, Tiruchirapalli and Warangal. Admission is through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by CBSE. Details are given on www.aieee.nic.in
7:I want to go for IIT. How should I go about it if I don't want to drop or waste a year?

Serious contenders for the IIT-JEE start their preparations right after completing class 10. The admission notification will appear in November. The examination would be held in April. You may apply for the first time during the year in which you appear for the Board Exams(class 12th) and the next year. You should have secured at least 60% (55% for SC/ST/PD) marks in the Board Examinations.

8:I am student of Class XII and want to give IIT-JEE 2007 Since I haven't started preparing yet, will I be able to complete my preparation for the Screening test on time?

There is no standard rule for this. If you are already ahead with your class 12 studies, then you just need to step up the tempo, assimilate all that you still don't know. The IIT JEE of 2006 is to set a new trend, so you would get an idea of the level of preparedness for the examination by analysing that. You can only put in your best effort now. Most students start their preparation for IIT-JEE as soon as they complete class 10 exams.

9:I am an aspirant for IIT and want to join a correspondence course. Which would be the best one?
Since this is the first time the new pattern will be used, only afterwards can anyone tell you tutorial was better and that too if one person used more than one such package. Most provide good study material. Before you sign up, research the manner of delivery, provision of feedback on assignments, series of mock tests and analyses, etc. Keep in touch with seniors who have either one set of material and assess their views. It is always better to get a first hand feedback. However, the magic is in the manner in which you make use of the help, material and other aids you have access to. So, whichever you choose, make sure that you are prepared to give 100% to it.
10:What are the subjects and requirements for applying for the IIIT-Hyderabad?

Admission to the undergraduate programmes at IIIT Hyderabad is through AIEEE conducted by CBSE. You may find out more by logging on to the website www.iiit.ac.in

11:I am an Electronics engineer pased out in 2004.I had been doing private job since sept 2005,but I was not earning too much.In sept. 2005,there was a vaccancy in BSNL for 3000 JTO POSTS. I started to prepare for these exams for my better career. The exam was in jan 2006 & it was a pretty tough one. But still though I fared well than oter students with whom i discussed later on.I am a general category student & my centre was in J&K.I WANT TO KNOW THE MINIMUM PASSING MARKS INTO EXAM FOR GENERAL CATEGORY?

Knowledge of the passing mark will not help in any way because the decision of the board is final. You have to move forward with the acceptance that you did not make it.
Comparing your performance with the opinion of others does not in any way confirm that you did well. Try for more such openings. If you have been doing your job well, you should be able to move to better paying private jobs too. In the 21st century job scenario, do not waste time on what is past, stop worrying about the future and live in the present. That will help you to focus better on your goals.

12:My age is 31 Years, I have done AMIE (Electrical Engg.), Presently I am working as a Junior Engineer in a public sector organization. For career growth what are option for me, also I want to shift in private organization for better opportunity ?

Since you have done AMIE, you are eligible for Govt. vacancies that require graduation in Engineering as pre-requisite qualification. You may keep on applying for such vacancies as and when they are advertised in Employment News. You may also appear in Engineering Services Examination conducted by UPSC though it will require strenuous efforts on your part. As regards the option of shifting to private organization, decision should be taken by you after carefully evaluating the pros and corns of working in Govt./private sector.

13:I am a diploma holder in mechanical engg. with first class (68.74%) & having an experience of quality inspection in automobile industry. I am searching a job in Pune. Sir I want to study further along with my job. So I want to know what are the further opportunities available to me and suggest suitable institutes.

If you want to have an Engineering degree while simultaneously pursuing your job also, you may enroll for section A&B of AMIE (Institution of Engineers(India), Kolkata). For detailed information log on to ttp://www.brilliant-tutorials.com/informationcenter/competitiveexams/camie.shtml#heading. Please check with the Institute of Armament Technology, Pune-25 for details.

16:I am a student of mechanical engineering. I am thinking of opting for IAS exams. I would like to make an informed choice in selecting the right subject for my Optional paper.

In terms of professional/technical courses the order of preference for Optional subjects is Law, Electrical, Civil, and Mechanical Engineering followed by Medical Science and Management. However, even though Law is the most popular, it’s had the lowest success rate while Medical Science. The recent trends indicate that the ten most sought after Optionals are History, Public Administration, Geography, Anthropology, Mathematics, Hindi Literature, Sociology, Philosophy, Physics and finally Political Science and Administration. Another interesting trend is that except for Hindi Literature, candidates have rejected all other languages.

But this is only a trend and you should not base your choice of Optionals on the basis of a trend or on what subject the topper opted for in the previous year. Incidentally, Commerce has now become Commerce & Accountancy and Political Science has become Political Science & International Relations. The newer subjects that have been included in the list of Optionals are Anthropology and Management.

At the time of their invention in 1960, lasers were called "a solution looking for a problem". Since then, they have become ubiquitous, finding utility in thousands of highly varied applications in every section of modern society, including consumer electronics, information technology, science, medicine, industry, law enforcement and the military. All the scientific departments of the Government of India have identified laser and its applications as a thrust area and have funded projects at academic institutions and national laboratories. The laser-related activity in the Department of Atomic Energy got a fillip in 1987 when a new research institute called Centre for Advanced Technology (CAT) was established at Indore to carry out major R & D programmes in the areas of lasers and accelerators. Since its inception, CAT has made commendable progress in both the areas and is widely recognised as an important R & D centre of India. If you just want to know about the prospects from IIT Kanpur, it would be advisable to correspond directly with someone already doing the programme or direct a query to the suitable department at IIT Kanpur.

24:Sir kindly tell me about Psychometric Test in various competitive examinations for engineers such as in NTPC?

Psychometric testing usually falls into three main types: Ability testing, Aptitude testing and Personality questionnaires. An ability test such as the General Ability Test (GAT) is usually made up of four tests of specific ability - numerical ability; verbal ability; non-verbal ability and spatial ability. Aptitude tests tend to be job related while personality questionnaires aim to identify the enduring characteristics of the person that are significant for interpersonal behaviour. In the case of selection of engineering graduates for NTPC, the psychometric test, group discussion and interview are held only for candidates who have qualified the selection test which has testing of subject knowledge and Executive Aptitude. For the Psychometric test, you only have to give an objective response to help the recruiter identify your personality traits relevant for the organisation. You are not expected to prepare any model answers for such tests.
